ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

Colonel (Ret USA) James M. Startzell, DMD, MS

 

Dr. James Startzell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Startzell received a B.S. from Virginia Polytechnique Institute, a M.S. from the University of Tennessee and a D.M.D. from Washington University School of Dental Medicine in 1978. He completed an A.E.G.D. at Ft. Jackson, S.C. and practiced general dentistry in Germany for four years. He trained in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center from 1982-1985 and subsequently practiced OMS in a large Army Hospital for 6 years. In 1991, following duty as Deputy Director for Professional Services in the 12th Evacuation Hospital, Desert Storm, he did a one year Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU, Shreveport where he also served as a Clinical Instructor in that OMS Residency. He then joined the faculty in the OMS Residency at Brooke Army Medical Center and served there as Program Director and Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery until retiring in 1997. Since 1997 he has been the Director of the OMS Residency at the UTHSC Dental School in San Antonio.

 

Dr. Startzell is a member of the American Dental Association and SADDS, the American Association of Dental Schools, and the Southwest Society of OMS. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a Life Fellow of the Taunus German American Medical Society.
