Dr. Stephen B. Milam is Professor and Hugh B. Tilson Endowed Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He obtained his dental training from Baylor College of Dentistry. Dr. Milam subsequently completed an anesthesiology residency at the University of Pittsburgh and an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Milam also received his Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a Fellow in the American College of Dentists.
Dr. Milam has authored or co-authored over 100 publications, and is the recipient of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Research Recognition Award for his contributions to the study of primary mechanisms of degenerative TMJ disease and pain. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Whitaker Foundation, and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation.
Currently, Dr. Milam is the Research Section Editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Chair of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Committee on Research, a member of the AAOMS Advisory Committee on Research and Technology Assessment, and a member of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Examination Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
